TIME’s ‘March Through TIME’ Brings Martin Luther King, Jr.’s ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech to Fortnite

58 years ago this weekend, more than 250,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C. to hear Martin Luther King, Jr. call for Black Americans to be granted the same rights, freedoms and justices enjoyed by their white neighbors. Now, you can experience King’s speech—one of the most iconic addresses in American history—in an innovative new way: on Fortnite, via TIME’s new “March Through TIME” project.

Best known as an online multiplayer game, Fortnite has been opening itself up as a storytelling and educational platform. For March Through TIME, TIME Studios partnered with Fortnite developer/publisher Epic Games and Fortnite community creators to develop an in-game experience set in Washington in which players can watch King’s speech while taking part in educational minigames to further their understanding of the civil rights movement. Players who beat enough of these games can activate a celebratory fireworks show over the National Mall. More educational resources, including civil rights-era photography, are included in an in-game museum that players can visit.
[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

March Through TIME, which launches Aug. 26 and is free to download, brings a novel educational experience to a platform that’s already wildly popular, especially with younger audiences (as of May 2020, Fortnite had 350 million registered accounts). The project’s executive producers, Tomi Omololu-Lange and Matthew O’Rourke, hope that parents, teachers and others use March Through TIME to teach kids about a vital era in American history via a platform they find familiar and engaging.

“The mission of this project is to introduce the legacy of Dr. King and other civil rights heroes to the next generation,” say Omololu-Lange and O’Rourke. “We wanted to reach kids where they were and create inspirational content as interactive and engaging as what they have become accustomed to. With Fortnite’s unprecedented scale and unparalleled immersive capabilities, we knew their platform would allow for the most significant impact.”

March Through TIME is an extension of TIME’s The March, a groundbreaking effort to recreate the 1963 March on Washington in virtual reality. That project is set to launch at the DuSable Museum in Chicago on Aug. 28. But thanks to Fortnite’s widespread popularity and availability—it can be installed on everything from a PlayStation to an iPhone—the March Through TIME experience aims to reach a far larger audience. The project was made with support from Intellectual Properties Management, Inc., licensor of the Estate of Martin Luther King, Jr., and built by Fortnite community creators ChaseJackman, GQuanoe, XWDFr, and YU7A using Epic Games’ Fortnite Creative tools.

“Fortnite Creative is a way for anyone to build fantastical new experiences and publish them to an audience of millions, all inside one of the world’s most popular destinations for social entertainment and gameplay,” says Nate Nanzer, vice president of global partnerships at Epic Games. “We were honored to help TIME Studios bring such an impactful moment in the ongoing struggle for civil rights to life inside Fortnite Creative.”

To experience March Through TIME, simply download Fortnite on the device of your choice, launch the app, then choose “creative mode.” The March Through TIME experience will be prominently featured on Epic’s creative mode hub at launch time, and will be available for a year. After finishing March Through TIME, users will be encouraged to visit The March website, where they can view educational videos from TIME Studios’ One Dream: 50th Anniversary of The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom project. (The March is made possible by American Family Insurance.)

TIME Studios Presents ‘March Through Time’ in Fortnite to Celebrate the Anniversary of The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom

‘March Through Time,’ a year-long educational event in Fortnite Creative inspired by TIME Studios’ groundbreaking experiential project ‘The March,’ will be available to millions of Fortnite players around the world on August 26, 2021

(New York, NY, Aug. 26, 2021) — TIME Studios, the Emmy Award®-winning television, film and immersive division of TIME, in collaboration with Epic Games’ Fortnite, has launched March Through Time, a new year-long Fortnite Creative experience to celebrate the anniversary of The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Inspired by TIME Studios’ groundbreaking immersive project The March, which brought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech to virtual reality for the first time, March Through Time, was developed to introduce a new audience to this historic event and explore pivotal moments from the Civil Rights Movement.
[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

“TIME Studios’ mission is to embrace innovative new formats to tell the world’s most impactful stories. We are thrilled to introduce our first-ever gaming experience and expand our groundbreaking The March project, which started as an immersive exhibit, into the global, educational event March Through Time in Fortnite Creative,” said president of TIME Studios Ian Orefice.

“Epic Games and Fortnite’s community creators have been instrumental in bringing this powerful content to millions of players, and we are excited to enable the next generation to explore Dr. King’s historic impact in a new way,” continued TIME Studios executive producers Tomi Omololu-Lange and Matthew O’Rourke.

Eric D. Tidwell, Esq., Managing Director & General Counsel, the King Estate said, “The King Estate is excited to partner with TIME once again on another innovative project. We continuously strive to move Dr. King from the history books and place his legacy directly into the lives of younger generations. With the advent of emerging technology, we seek to use all resources available to continue to spread his wonderful legacy of hope, peace, love, and equality. Presenting his most famous speech in such an interactive format helps us achieve that goal.”

March Through Time transports players to D.C. 63, a reimagined Washington, DC, allowing them to step into a fully immersive experience and learn first-hand the civil rights teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. like never before. In the experience, players will travel to the Lincoln Memorial and United States National Mall, where Dr. King gave his iconic speech for Civil Rights. March Through Time extends with museum-inspired points of interest and quests where players will work together with others to complete various collaborative mini-games. These activities progress players through the experience and bring to life important themes of Dr. King’s speech: we move forward when we work together.

“Fortnite Creative is a way for anyone to build fantastical new experiences and publish them to an audience of millions, all inside one of the world’s most popular destinations for social entertainment and gameplay,” said Nate Nanzer, Vice President of Global Partnerships at Epic Games. “We were honored to help TIME Studios bring such an impactful moment in the ongoing struggle for civil rights to life inside Fortnite Creative.”

The collaboration between Fortnite and TIME was developed through the project’s creative leads Tomi Omololu-Lange and Matthew O’Rourke from TIME Studios, who also serve as the lead Executive Producers for March Through Time. Ian Orefice will also serve as an Executive Producer on TIME Studios behalf, with TIME’s Bridget Wilson overseeing business development for the project. Using tools available in Fortnite Creative, the experience was built by Fortnite community creators ChaseJackman, GQuanoe, XWDFr, and YU7A]. March Through Time was created with the support of Intellectual Properties Management, Inc. (Licensor of the Estate of Martin Luther King Jr.), which granted TIME development rights for this project.

Learn more about the March Through Time experience in Fortnite.

March Through Time is inspired by TIME’s groundbreaking immersive exhibit, The March, launched in February 2020 at the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago. The exhibit was brought to life with creative and production partners JuVee Productions, Digital Domain, V.A.L.I.S.studio, and RYOT, and the support of presenting sponsor American Family Insurance. For more information and to view the digital experience of The March visit TIME’s The March website.

Vermont Offered the U.S. a Textbook for Reopening Schools Safely. Why Is It Throwing Out the Lesson Plan?

Americans have reached consensus on a single goal: children must return to classrooms. Yet, as the Delta variant has surged, policymakers across the country have abandoned measures to protect unvaccinated children from COVID-19. Months after a withering debate on the best way to open schools, only 12 states have school mask mandates while 9 have banned them. In Florida, Gov. DeSantis signed an executive order prohibiting mask mandates in schools, and the State Board of Education threatened to withhold state funding from districts that required masking in defiance of his prohibition. Several governors, including Tennessee’s Bill Lee, have issued orders allowing parents to opt out of local mandates.
[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

Even in Vermont, a state lauded as a model for its approach to school reopening and vaccination rates, children have been an afterthought of the pandemic response. As a public health researcher, practitioner, and parent in Vermont, I’ve watched the state over the last year retreat from many of the lessons it initially offered for a country struggling to return children to classrooms.

Vermont reopened its schools on September 8, 2020 with robust, 41-page statewide guidance amid a mere 5 cases. State and school leaders called upon communities to come together to keep kids safe and in-school. When cases flared in late fall, Vermont Governor Phil Scott closed bars and instituted restrictions on social gatherings, travel, and sports. Keeping kids in school represented a central priority for the state, and leaders aligned its public health response to achieve this goal.

Yet, Vermont’s state leadership has set aside key elements of its success as it has prepared for the 2021-22 school year. Citing its high vaccination rates, the state bucked CDC and AAP masking guidance in its 1.5 page reopening memo recommending “light touch” mitigation measures in K-12 schools even as it in August registered the fastest growing epidemic in the U.S. State leaders recommended masking in children under 12 and in students 12 and older in schools with vaccination rates less than 80% but stopped short of mandating it. Absent in state plans were descriptions of the robust layered approach including effective ventilation that experts widely view as essential to reopening as the hyper-transmissible Delta variant spreads.

Vermont’s local control approach has left school leaders and unvaccinated children at the mercy of village political whims and expertise. School leaders struggle to make public rapidly changing conditions, and some report receiving threats from community members opposed to mask requirements. Schools in the country’s most vaccinated communities have adopted the CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidance in full while the school board in Essex County, an area with vaccination rates more than 25% lower than the rest of the state, voted 5-0 against masking. As a result, some unvaccinated Vermont children will return to schools with more limited mitigation measures in place than what the CDC recommends in public indoor settings in counties with substantial or high transmission. Yet, the risk of a variant twice as transmissible as the wild-type virus is far greater this fall and therefore calls for redoubling mitigation strategies.

Gov. Scott is not the only governor hiding behind the state’s high vaccination rate and counterparts who have shown outright disregard for the health and education of children. Once criticized for instituting an outdoor masking mandate, Massachusetts Gov. Baker rejected calls from the Massachusetts Medical Society, Teachers’ Unions, and others for universal masking mandates in schools, leaving the onus of public health decision making on the state’s 404 individual school boards. New Hampshire Gov. Sununu signed a law banning vaccine mandates while eschewing calls for masks in schools.

These actions have come at the most dangerous moment for children in the pandemic. Children now account for nearly 1 in 5 cases of COVID-19 in the U.S, and pediatric Covid-19 hospitalizations have reached their pandemic record. Schools that have opened without mitigation measures in place now have sent thousands of students into quarantine within days, and staff shortages have forced others to close. Even as vaccines continue to protect against hospitalizations and death, mounting data highlights the imperative to employ robust strategies to protect children too young to be vaccinated.

It’s time to stop minimizing the risk of Covid-19 to children and debating minimalistic approaches to reopening schools. U.S. and state leadership must build on the best practices from Vermont and other states, rather than rationalizing policy choices that compromise the health and education of children mere weeks or months before they are eligible for vaccination. Heavily vaccinated states such as Vermont must once again lead by example and use all available tools to ensure a safe return to in-person education.

Returning children safely to classrooms must now be the central goal of the public health response. To this end, governors must institute indoor mask mandates—and restrict other activities as conditions dictate–to curb skyrocketing cases across communities. At the same time, governors must mandate robust school guidance that employs all evidence-based tools to keep kids healthy and in school, including universal masking, ventilation, testing, and controls on high-risk indoor activities, including lunches. States must also ensure that students with high-risk medical conditions have access to remote learning or other accommodations until they are eligible for vaccination.

Vermont has taught the country that it takes a village to bring children back to school during a pandemic, but now we must not leave villages to manage the pandemic on their own. Instead, the U.S. must center the health and education of its children in a unified public health response and create the conditions for a safe return to schools.

I’m Supposed To Be in a Wedding. Will I Risk Bringing COVID-19 Home to My Kids?

Welcome to COVID Questions, TIME’s advice column. We’re trying to make living through the pandemic a little easier, with expert-backed answers to your toughest coronavirus-related dilemmas. While we can’t and don’t offer medical advice—those questions should go to your doctor—we hope this column will help you sort through this stressful and confusing time. Got a question? Write to us at covidquestions@time.com.

Today, A.S. in Wisconsin asks:

My best friend is getting married in September and I’m in the wedding. I just found out at least one of the groomsmen has refused to be vaccinated, and the couple is not requiring vaccines or COVID-19 tests from their guests. I have been vaccinated, but I have young children who are not. I will not bring my children, but am I putting them at risk by attending? How do I balance wanting to support my friend but also protecting my family?

As I read your question, you’re asking two different things: First, there’s “what sacrifices should I make to protect my children from COVID-19?” Second, there’s “how do I navigate the social challenges of the pandemic?” Like so many other questions related to the pandemic, neither of these have easy or definitive solutions. But we spoke with a psychiatrist and several pediatric physicians to try and sort them out.

For starters, it’s important to consider the scientific evidence about the spread of COVID-19. You’ve already made one important decision that reduces the risk to yourself and your children: getting vaccinated. However, vaccination can’t completely eliminate the risks facing you or your kids. Emerging evidence suggests that even fully vaccinated people can spread the virus—especially the now-dominant Delta variant—to others. Concerns about this possibility led the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in July to once again recommend that even fully vaccinated people wear masks indoors in most areas of the country.

So if your question is whether you could potentially go to this wedding, get infected with COVID-19, and bring it home to your kids, the answer is yes, there’s a chance that could happen. That would be true even if everyone there is vaccinated, though that would reduce the risk.

That said, children have so far proven remarkably resilient in the face of this virus. As of Aug. 18, 430 U.S. children have died of the coronavirus, and while the death of any child is an unspeakable tragedy, that’s a small fraction of the nearly 630,000 overall U.S. deaths so far. Furthermore, children face lots of dangers whenever they go out into the world, whether it’s for school, daycare or playdates. How a parent weighs any potential danger to their children comes down to their risk tolerance, says Dr. Allison Messina, the chief of the infectious disease division at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital.

Messina advises parents who are nervous about their children getting COVID-19 to ask themselves a question: what are you really worried about? As she points out, the data suggest previously healthy kids are at low risk of severe disease from the virus. However, the Delta variant makes this calculation harder—pediatric ICUs in hard-hit states are hitting capacity, but it’s unclear if Delta is inherently more dangerous to kids or if more kids are falling ill simply because this strain is so transmissible and kids under 12 can’t yet be vaccinated.

“When I answer these questions, I don’t really answer them as ‘you should’ or ‘you shouldn’t,'” Messina says. “I just say, these are the risks that you would face if you decided to do this.”

If you decide to attend the wedding, there are other ways you could reduce your risk of bringing the virus home to your kids. You could wear a mask, for instance, though they are better at preventing infected people from spreading the virus, rather than helping the wearer avoid getting infected, so consider wearing one at home for a while after you get back (getting tested afterwards and self-isolating if you’re positive could be smart, too). Depending on your relationship, you could ask the couple getting married to require masks, even if just for unvaccinated guests. You could also decide to attend the ceremony but skip the reception to lessen your overall exposure, but given that you’re in the wedding party, that could be socially difficult. (Also consider the venue—outdoor, well-ventilated spaces are generally safer than indoor, poorly ventilated ones.)

That brings us to the second part of your question: how to deal with the social side of your dilemma. The first step is having a conversation with your soon-to-be-wed friend, says Dr. Sophia Albott, a psychiatrist with the University of Minnesota Medical School and the practice University of Minnesota Physicians. Discuss your concerns, talk about potential solutions, and frame things around your children’s safety, she says. “These conversations are difficult to have, but there is potentially an opportunity even for some reaffirmation of their friendship or some sort of two-party empathy.”

If you decide not to attend the wedding or minimize your participation, your friend could be angry or disappointed. Weddings are always stressful, but the upheaval of the pandemic has drawn up a lot of extreme emotions in many people. Albott suggests that you work to keep your conversation respectful, and be sure to acknowledge how your friend is feeling. That’s especially wise if, like so many other engaged couples, your friend had to delay or otherwise change their wedding plans because of the virus.

Finally, while you’re worrying about your children and friends, Albott recommends showing yourself a little kindness, too. Problems like these aren’t easy to navigate, and it’s important to make sure that you’re getting enough sleep, exercise, and connection with other people. “The pandemic has just gone on so long, that I think everyone is tired,” says Albott. “As much as we can, [we should] take care of ourselves, give ourselves a break, and give other people a break.”

Pfizer-BioNTech’s Vaccine Is the First COVID-19 Shot to Get Full Approval From the U.S. FDA

On Aug. 23, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first COVID-19 vaccine, one made by Pfizer-BioNTech, for anyone 16 years and older. The vaccine requires two doses and according to company studies, is 91% effective in protecting people from COVID-19 disease, including from severe illness. The vaccine received the FDA’s emergency use authorization (EUA) in December, which allowed the company to distribute and administer the shot due to the urgent public health threat of the pandemic.

“I am hopeful this approval will help increase confidence in our vaccine, as vaccination remains the best tool we have to help protect lives and achieve herd immunity,” said Pfizer chairman and CEO Albert Bourla in a statement.
[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

With full approval, little in the way of how the vaccine is made will change, according to Pfizer. The two companies are discussing with the FDA how the labels on the approved vials will be revised to reflect the full licensure, but the manufacturing process will not change appreciably.

What will change is the quality control requirements for each lot of vaccine. As with any approved vaccine, the FDA must now conduct its own analysis of each lot manufactured and give the green light to release those lots on to the market. Under the EUA, the companies sent samples from each lot they made to the FDA at least 48 hours before distributing, along with their own analysis of the doses’ safety and quality but did not have to wait for the FDA to release them.

What may also change are vaccine mandates from both public and private agencies including governments, schools, and businesses. Having an approved vaccine may provide stronger support for such entities to require vaccination for employees, students and customers. While some already do have such mandates in place, the FDA approval may lead more organizations to adopt similar requirements. The full licensure may also help to sway those who have been reluctant to get vaccinated with a shot that was not approved. “While millions of people have already safely received COVID-19 vaccines, we recognize that for some, the FDA approval of a vaccine may now instill additional confidence to get vaccinated,” acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock said in a statement. “Today’s milestone puts us one step closer to altering the course of this pandemic in the U.S.”

Pfizer and BioNTech submitted their request for approval in May, and the agency had eight months to review the 340,000 page package that included data from 44,000 people who participated in clinical trials. Those data showed that overall, the two doses of vaccine are 91% effective in protecting people from COVID-19 disease up to six months after the second dose. The FDA requires follow-up data of at least six months in order to qualify for approval.

In the months since the vaccine has been administered around the world, the FDA has also added warnings about rare side effects that can occur among vaccinated people, including the risk of inflammation of the heart muscle and tissues surrounding the heart.

With an approved vaccine, Pfizer-BioNTech can also start selling and distributing its shot through its own channels. However, Pfizer said it has an agreement with the U.S. government to provide doses through April 2022, at no cost to Americans, and expects the U.S. government to remain the sole distributor of its vaccine through that time. The vaccine will therefore continue to be offered at the same sites where it has been distributed until now—at federal or state mass vaccination sites, pharmacies, hospitals, doctors’ offices and other health care centers.

Those sites would also be responsible for giving Americans an additional, booster dose of the vaccine which the FDA is currently considering as a way to bolster protection against the more infectious Delta variant. The agency is expected to announce its decision on whether a booster is needed in coming weeks; the FDA has already authorized a booster shot for people with compromised immune systems.
